What is Marriage Allowance?

Marriage Allowance is available for couples who are married or in a civil partnership. It allows you to transfer £1250 of your Personal Allowance to your husband, wife, or civil partner. This can reduce their on-going annual tax liability by £251.

To receive this benefit as a couple, one of you must earn less than your partner and have an income of no more than £12,500. While the other partner’s income must be between £12,501 and £50,000 (£43,430 in Scotland) to qualify.

Your Back Payments

Upon successful application, back payments of up to £1000 will be awarded.

The back payments represent a total of £250 for every year you have been married, going back 4 years, representing a maximum of £1000.

Please be advised that it can take up to 6-8 weeks for back payments to be processed.

Eligibility Criteria

Should you meet all of the below criteria, you can apply today for the Marriage Allowance:

  • You are currently married or in a civil partnership
  • One of you pays Income Tax at the basic rate with an income between £12,501 and £50,000 (£43,430 in Scotland)
